Description: Whether you write fantasy, historical romance, sci fi or paranormal fiction, building a believable world keeps readers coming back for more. In this four-part audio workshop, we’ll cover how to create a believable physical setting, creating culture and religion that belong in your world, using language (and creating your own) to add to the setting, and sustaining your fictional world over multiple books. Then, bring your questions and we’ll brainstorm your toughest problems!
Instructor: Gail Z. Martin
Multi-session class - Series Class - The three sessions will cover:
Moving In: Creating the Physical Setting for Your Fiction World
Set the stage by making the physical setting real to your readers. That takes more than just description. Find out how to make your world so real, readers will feel they can reach through your pages and touch it!
Getting to Know the Neighbors: Populating Your Fiction World with Believable Background Characters
Who are the people in your neighborhood? A good story needs believable background characters. Gail helps you think through the roles and relationships required to populate your world with people your readers will swear you’ve borrowed from real life!
Culture and History: Giving Your Fiction World a Backstory
Culture and history shape your characters and their society.
The culture and history of a world is formed by many factors: geography, religion, weather, migration and trade patterns, economics, pandemics and inventions, to name a few. Find out how to build richly textured cultures and credible histories.
Conflict and Identity: Dealing with Race, Gender and Religion in a Fictional World.
Your characters’ identities and their culture’s conflicts will revolve around who is “us” and who is “them.” Worldbuilding gives you a powerful way to take a fresh look at race, gender and religion and the impact of each on the society you build.
